Terroir

The French have long believed that "terroir", the unique characteristics of a vineyard's soil and climate, will determine the quality and character of its wine. Others, particularly some winemakers, believe great wine is made in the winery, not in the vineyard. Probably both are true, but we are certain that if you don't have good grapes you won't have good wine.

Terroir: a French term for any viticultural area including: the soil, the microclimate, the topography, the sunlight, the hydrology, and the ecology. Along with the specific weather conditions of a given season in a viticultural area, the terroir helps to create the variable aspects of a grape's character, which include the sweetness, the acidity and the pH. Though the wines produced by a winery from one vintage to another vintage will differ according to the seasonal weather conditions and how the wine was treated, the terroir still remains apparent through all vintages to the experienced palate.
At English Estate, we’ve been making wines since 1983. We attribute the cherry wood flavor apparent in our wines to our natural terroir. And, of course, from vineyard to vineyard, the terroir changes, so we’ve added the following section in order to familiarize you with the specific characteristics which contribute to each of our wine's unique qualities.
