In the past, lead has been the material of choice for fishing weights. Lead is a dense material, easily melted and poured into any shape, and relatively cheap to use. However, lead is also very toxic. This is something that has been known all along. That is why lead additives have been banned from our gasoline and house paints. And, that is why lead-shot has been banned from use by waterfowl hunters. It is also known that birds (ducks, geese, loons, etc.) pick up the lead-shot as grit while feeding, and die a slow, painful death from lead poisoning.

Until recently, the use of lead fishing weights by anglers was given little thought. Studies now show that recreational anglers are a significant source of lead in the environment. It is estimated that anglers in the US lose or discard 1,000 tons of lead fishing weights annually. This directly contributes to the estimated 2 to 3 million waterfowl that die each year from lead poisoning.

Similar to lead, Tin is an excellent material for making fishing weights. Tin is a dense material, and is easily melted and poured into any shape. Although Tin is more expensive than lead, it is still considered a relatively cheap material for the manufacture of fishing weights. And unlike lead, Tin is not a toxic material. In fact, Tin is so non-toxic, it has been used for over 100 years to manufacture food storage containers (Tin cans).
