Summary of How to Use the SSPC Standards

Summary of How to Use the SSPC Standards

Abrasives (AB)

These standards define the requirements for selecting and evaluating different abrasive types used for blast cleaning steel and other surfaces for painting and other purposes.

Paint Application (PA)

Paint Application (PA) cover both general and specific requirements for applying different types of coatings to a wide variety of surfaces.

Painting Systems (PS) and Coating Systems (CS)

These documents cover SSPC Painting Systems (PS) and Coating Systems (CS) documents, of which there are three types: complete painting systems, painting system guides, and performance-based painting system material specifications. PS and CS documents were developed only for steel surfaces, not for wood or concrete.

Paints and Coatings (PAINT)

Paints and Coatings (PAINT) standards are specifications for using certain types of generic coatings on different surfaces.

Qualification Procedures (QP)

SSPC currently develops six types of consensus standards, one type being the Qualification Procedure, or QP. QPs are published procedures, developed by SSPC technical committees through a consensus process, which define a sequence of actions or functions a contracting firm or other entity must meet to establish a level of competence or qualification.

Surface Preparation (SP)

SSPC Surface Preparation Standards are used to specify proper surface preparation methods and materials for steel, other metals, and concrete.

Technology Guides (GUIDE)

SSPC Technology Guides are used to aid applicators and specifiers in successfully executing different aspects of painting projects.

Technology Reports (TR)

SSPC Technology Reports cover procedures, practices, equipment, and materials used in a variety of surface preparation and coating application projects.

Technology Updates (TU)

SSPC Technology Updates are used to inform professionals about changes in practices and processes involved in protective coatings projects.

Test Panel Preparation Methods (ME)

SSPC Test Panel Preparation Methods describe the requirements for preparing standard laboratory corroded test panels for use in evaluating coatings in accelerated or fence tests.

Technical Insight Reports

SSPC Technical Insight Reports are handy capsules of some of the most important issues in the coatings industry about which we at SSPC frequently receive questions.

From inspection planning and developing quality control documents to monitoring ambient conditions, this growing series offers you the best of SSPC’s technical expertise in an easy-to-read and reference format.
