Technology Guides (GUIDE)
SSPC Technology Guides are used to aid applicators and specifiers in successfully executing different aspects of painting projects.
SSPC-Guide 6, Guide for Containing Debris Generated During Paint Removal Operations
This guide describes methods of paint removal, containment systems and procedures for minimizing or preventing emissions from escaping the work area, and procedures for assessing the adequacy of the controls over emissions.
The containment systems are categorized in up to four classes per type of paint removal method, based on the extent to which emissions are controlled.
This guide is primarily intended for use with steel structures; however, some of the methods and materials may be suited for use on concrete, aluminum, wood, or other materials of construction.
This guide is intended to be used by facility owners, specifiers, designers, and contractors. It may also be used by other interested parties.
Price: $25.00
SSPC-Guide 7, Guide to the Disposal of Lead-Contaminated Surface Preparation Debris
This guide provides information regarding handling, testing, and disposal of solid debris generated during preparation of surfaces previously painted with lead-containing paint.
This guide is based on federal regulations only. States or other local jurisdictions may have requirements that are stricter, such as requiring additional analytical procedures or regulating other metals. Non-hazardous waste containing lead is also regulated in some states.
This guide does not cover removal of the coating from the structure or containment of the debris. These activities are described in SSPC-Guide 6.
While this guide is written primarily with reference to removing lead-based paints, other elements may also cause the debris to be classified as a hazardous waste.
Price: $25.00
SSPC-Guide 9, Guide for Atmospheric Testing of Coatings in the Field
This guide covers the procedures for planning, performing, and documenting field evaluations of atmospheric testing of coatings applied to steel panels or steel structures.
It is intended for coating systems applied to new or previously coated structures.
It is intended for use by coatings specifiers, end users, manufacturers, formulators, and test laboratories.
Price: $25.00
SSPC-Guide 10, Guide to Specifying Coatings Conforming to Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) Content R
This guide describes procedures for preparing a specification for protective coatings conforming with volatile organic compound (VOC) content requirements.
Procedures cover determining VOC content, compliance requirements, qualifying, selecting, and evaluating performance of coatings, and assembling the specification.
This guide is intended to be used by specifiers, end users, and others who are required to select, test, or specify coatings to meet VOC regulations.
Price: $25.00
SSPC-PA Guide 11
SSPC-PA Guide 11 Protecting Edges, Crevices, and Irregular Steel Surfaced by Stripe Coating. This guide discusses the technique called “stripe coating” or “striping” as a way of providing extra corrosion protection measures on edges, outside corners, crevices, bolt heads, welds, and other irregular steel surfaces, including optional surface preparation techniques for sharp edges to improve coating performance. Some details, including the advantages and limitations of specific methods of obtaining additional coating thickness, are described to assist the specification writer in assuring that the project specification will address adequate corrosion protection.
Price: $25.00
SSPC-Guide 12, Guide for Illumination of Industrial Painting Projects
This guide provides information on the quantity and quality of lighting on industrial painting projects that is conducive to achieving quality surface preparation and coating application, productivity, inspection/quality control, and accident prevention.
This guide is intended for use by facility owners, specifiers, designers, and contractors.
Price: $25.00
SSPC-Guide 13, Guide for the Identification and Use of Industrial Coating Materials in Computerized
The objective of this document is to provide a general structure for coating product data. Product data includes manufacturer identifiers, physical properties, performance parameters, and recommendations on use.
This guide is intended to simplify the exchange of similarly complete sets of data between different computerized databases and to promote a consistent representation for the exchange of coating product data in paper form. It suggests the subject matter to be included in a coating material product database. It is not intended to be an all-inclusive list of data to be stored and it is not a database. Implementation of this guide does not have to include all the data elements listed within, and there are no constraints on how data should be displayed in specific databases.
The guide presents parameters needed to characterize industrial coating product data. It includes data elements (fields) needed to uniquely identify a coating material, to describe its properties, and to report manufacturer's recommendations on its use.
Price: $25.00
SSPC-Guide 14, Guide for the Repair of Imperfections in Galvanized, Organic, or Inorganic Zinc-Coat
This guide describes one method for repairing galvanized, organic, or inorganic zinc coatings using an organic zinc-rich coating. ASTM A 780 briefly describes this and other alternative methods (metallizing and zinc-based solders) for repair of damaged and uncoated areas of hot-dip galvanized coatings.
This method is intended to repair imperfections resulting from application, welding, cutting, drilling, grinding, abrading, or rough handling during transport or erection. It may also be used to repair imperfections in galvanizing, organic, or inorganic zinc coating that have occurred from weathering during storage or after erection.
This method can also be used to repair topcoated galvanizing, organic, or inorganic zinc coating.
This guide is intended for use to supplement the coating manufacturer's printed instructions and literature.
Price: $25.00
SSPC-Guide 15, Field Methods for Retrieval and Analysis of Soluble Salts on Steel and Other Nonporo
This Guide describes the most commonly used field methods for the retrieval and analysis of soluble salts on steel and other nonporous substrates. Laboratory methods are only included for situations where laboratory control is desired.
Coatings applied on surfaces contaminated with soluble salts exceeding a certain concentration exhibit diminished performance. This Guide is intended to assist the user in selecting specific procedures for retrieving and analyzing soluble salts. It discusses the various methods for retrieving salts from a surface and the analytical methods used to determine the concentration of the soluble salts in the extracted solution. Appendices include information on sources of testing equipment and materials.
Price: $25.00
SSPC-Guide 16, Guide to Specifying and Selecting Dust Collectors
This guide will assist end-users in the selection of dust collectors to be used in conjunction with containment systems to control emissions to the environment, enhance visibility, and reduce worker exposures within the containment. It will discuss the purpose of dust collector use in painting projects; define dust collector terminology; describe the types of dust collectors and the mechanisms of collection; and discuss efficiency, operation, and maintenance of dust collectors.
