Paints and Coatings (PAINT)
Paints and Coatings (PAINT) standards are specifications for using certain types of generic coatings on different surfaces.
SSPC-Paint 31, Single-Package Waterborne Alkyd Primer for Steel Surfaces, Performance-Based
This specification covers an air-drying, ready-mixed, pigmented, waterborne (i.e., water-reducible) alkyd or modified alkyd pigmented primer for blast cleaned steel. It is intended as the first coat of a waterborne coating system consisting of one or two coats of this primer and one or two coats of a waterborne topcoat.
This primer is suitable for exposures in Environmental Zones 1A (interior, normally dry), 1B (exterior, normally dry), 2A (frequently wet by fresh water [excluding immersion]) and 2B (frequently wet by salt water [excluding immersion]).
This primer is intended for brush, spray, or roller application over steel surfaces prepared in accordance with SSPC-SP 6, Commercial Blast Cleaning. It is suitable as a shop primer, field primer, maintenance primer, or intermediate coat, and is to be applied in accordance with SSPC-PA 1, Shop, Field, and Maintenance Painting of Steel. If the primed part of the structure is to be exposed to the weather, it should be topcoated as soon as practical, according to the manufacturer's published instructions.
This specification does not include primers based on latex polymers, which are described in SSPC-PS 24.00.
Price: $25.00
SSPC-Paint 32, Coal-Tar Emulsion Coating
This specification covers a coal-tar emulsion coating to be used as a protective weather coat for hot- or cold-applied bituminous coatings on steel structures. It may also be used over suitable primers as a protective coating for aboveground steel structures subjected to atmospheric exposure and the deleterious effects of oxidation and ultraviolet radiation.
It is suitable for use on parts or structures exposed in Environmental Zone 1B (exterior, normally dry). It can also be used in heavy industrial environments such as Zones 3A (chemical exposure acidic), 3B (chemical exposure neutral), and 3C (chemical exposure alkaline) where color is not a prime consideration.
Price: $25.00
SSPC-Paint 33, Coal-Tar Mastic Coating, Cold-Applied
This specification covers a cold-applied coal-tar coating for use on underground and underwater steel structures.
This coating, when applied over properly prepared carbon steel, is suitable for use on parts or structures exposed in Environmental Zones 2A (frequently wet by fresh water), 2B (frequently wet by salt water), 2C (fresh water immersion), 2D (salt water immersion), 3B (chemical exposure neutral), and 3C (chemical exposure alkaline). The coating is also suitable for use on hydraulic structures and pipe. It must be used with discretion for immersion in corrosive chemicals since the coating is dissolved by some organic solvents and attacked by oxidizing solutions.
This coating is intended for application by brush or spray for use by itself or as a primer in a multi-coat system.
Price: $25.00
SSPC-Paint 34, Water-Borne Epoxy Topcoat for Steel Surfaces
This specification covers an ambient-cured, two-component water-borne epoxy coating that is intended for use as a finish coat in multicoat water-borne epoxy systems for steel.
Topcoats are categorized according to performance levels.
Topcoats meeting this specification, when used with an appropriate primer, are suitable for exposures in Environmental Zones 1A (interior, normally dry), 1B (exterior, normally dry), 2A (frequently wet by fresh water), 2B (frequently wet by salt water), and 3C (chemical exposure, alkaline).
The specified topcoat is intended for application by brush, spray, or roller over primed surfaces prepared in accordance with the manufacturer's recommendations. It is suitable for use as a water-borne epoxy topcoat in a two-coat system or as an intermediate coat and topcoat in a three-coat system, to be applied in accordance with the manufacturer's recommendations.
Price: $25.00
SSPC-Paint 35, Medium Oil Alkyd Primer (Air Dry/Low Bake), Type I and Type II
This specification covers a French process zinc oxide, and medium oil alkyd primer designed for cold rolled sheet or unrusted hot rolled, blast cleaned structural steel. Recoat or dry-through time is 18 hours. It has good resistance to weathering.
This paint is suitable for exposures in Environmental Zones 1A (interior, normally dry) and 1B (exterior, normally dry). It is intended for brush, roller, or spray application over new or unrusted steel surfaces prepared in accordance with SSPC-SP 6, Commercial Blast Cleaning, or SSPC-SP 11, Power Tool Cleaning to Bare Metal, or better. This primer is to be applied in accordance with SSPC-PA 1, Shop, Field, and Maintenance Painting of Steel. If the primed steel is to be exposed to the weather, it should be topcoated as soon as practical.
Price: $25.00
SSPC-Paint 36, Tow-Component Weatherable Aliphatic Polyurethane Topcoat, Performance-Based
This specification covers the requirements for a high-performance two-component UV-stable polyurethane topcoat (ASTM D 16, Type V polyurethane). It is intended as a topcoat that provides excellent color and gloss retention, not as a thick-section elastomeric coating.
Coatings meeting the requirements of this specification are generally suitable for exposures in SSPC Environmental Zones 1A (interior, normally dry), 1B (exterior, normally dry), 2A (frequently wet by fresh water, excluding immersion), 2B (frequently wet by salt water, excluding immersion), 3B (chemical exposure, neutral), and 3C (chemical exposure, alkaline).
The specified coating is intended for application by brush, spray, or roller. It is generally applied over a primer or intermediate coating.
