SSPC-VIS 3
Contains a series of 43 full-color reference photographs to be used as a supplement to the SSPC standards for hand and power tool cleaned steel. Shows a total of seven different steel surfaces (four uncoated and three previously coated) before and after hand tool cleaning (SP 2), power tool cleaning with power wire brushes and sanding discs (SP 3), power tool cleaning to bare metal (SP 11), and commercial grade power tool cleaning (SP 15). Also contains photos of SP 11 surfaces with a restored profile, a revised guide to the use of reference photographs, a new table of standards and conditions depicted, and additional explanatory notes.
PCS Certification Exam
The Protective Coatings Specialist certification program (PCS) identifies and awards recognition to individuals who have in-depth knowledge in the principles and practices of industrial coatings technology.
Certification attests to the professional credibility of the coatings practitioner and raises the standards of the protective coatings profession.
• Candidates must provide a formal application and three professional references to SSPC • SSPC recommends that candidates take the C1 and C-2 Courses before sitting for the PCS Exam • Candidates should read entire application for complete prerequisite details
Special Note:
Candidates must complete a comprehensive multiple choice and essay question exam and pass with a 70% or better.
Please check Program Requirements before registering.
SSPC-VIS 1
SSPC's most widely used visual reference features over 50 full-color photos of previously coated and uncoated, rusted steel surfaces before and after dry abrasive blast cleaning. Cleanliness requirements for conditions depicted are defined by the SSPC surface preparation specifications for white metal (SP 5), near-white (SP 10), commercial (SP 6), industrial (SP 14), and brush-off (SP 7) blast finishes. Appendix photographs show variations in white metal surfaces caused by different metallic and non-metallic abrasives, profile depth, angle of view, and lighting. Now with guides in both English and Spanish!
Failure Analysis of Paints and Coatings Revised Edition
Not available as an SSPC Organizational Member Free Publication Selection
Presents a solid review of basic coatings chemistry and the field and laboratory techniques used for analyzing common application defects and coating failures. Individual chapters discuss general principles of coating formulation; why coatings work and why they fail; the role of pigments, additives and solvents; coating types and common failure modes; application-related problems; field, analytical and physical methods; examples of coating failures; the repair of coating failures; and more. Illustrated, easy to read, and fully indexed. Published by John Wiley and Sons.
Using Coatings Inspection Instruments
Not available as an SSPC Organizational Member Free Publication Selection. Provides detailed, easy-to-follow instruction on the use of over 40 different coatings inspection instruments. Each of the book's 11 sections presents full-color images, guided notes, and workshops describing the step-by-step use of instruments, visual standards and test kits for measuring ambient conditions and surface temperature, measuring surface profile depth, assessing surface cleanliness, sampling and testing for soluble salt contamination, calculating and measuring wet film thickness, measuring coating thickness, adhesion testing, detecting pinholes and holidays in coatings and linings, and more. Includes instructions for administering workshops, a glossary of terms, and an index of industry standards. Published by KTA-Tator, Inc.
SSPC-VIS 2
SSPC's popular rust standard features a series of 27 full color images and 27 black and white diagrams representing various degrees of spot, general, and pinpoint rusting on painted steel surfaces. Text and tables provide a guide to the use of the reference photographs; a scale and description of standard rust grades; a comparison of SSPC, ASTM, ISO, and other rust grade scales; and other useful information.
ICRI Technical Guideline No. 03732
Not available as an SSPC Organizational Member Free Publication Selection. This document and comparator set provides a useful written and visual guide to selecting an appropriate method of concrete surface preparation prior to the installation of a coating, lining, or other protective system. Discusses the unique aspects of 12 different surface preparation and cleaning methods: detergent scrubbing, low-pressure water cleaning, acid etching, grinding, abrasive blasting, shotblasting, scarifying, needle scaling, high- and ultrahigh-pressure waterjetting, scabbling, flame blasting, and milling/rotomilling. Appendices discuss selection processes, sealers and coatings, safety, and additional reference standards. Published by the International Concrete Repair Institute (ICRI)
