"I cannot remember a time when I did not draw," muses Barbara, but she was formally introduced to the paint brush as ninth grader in Byram, Mississippi, by the school's first art teacher, Mrs. Eloise Smith. Barbara still glows with confidence when she thinks of the encouragement she received from her teacher all those years ago. For nearly forty years, Barbara has been producing great Southern art scenes. although she has been a lifetime artist, it wasn't until her family settled in Thomasville in the mid sixties that Barbara began selling her work. Barbara's husband exhibited some of her work at his booth at a local gun show. To their surprise, all of the paintings sold! That was the beginning of an art career that has helped put their four children through school and college. Barbara uses several tools and materials in her work. She chooses acrylic and/or oil , modeling past (which came into her life much by accident), and a palette knife and/or bush to create her pictures. Barbara says that she prefers to paint her Southern scenes on old wood but has been known to paint on almost anything that cannot break! Some formal training took place for Barbara at Hinds Junior College in Raymond, Mississippi. She also took classes from James Hearn at the Mobile Museum of Art. Although Barbara no longer attends craft fairs, her paintings can be found in several places - Antiques and Accents and the AL-TOM RC&D Office in Thomasville, Alabama, and on her Ebay store "Possum Shop Antiques." |
