Joanna Nichols was exposed to the art of painting in her homeland of Scotland where many of her female relatives painted as a hobby. While living in Canada, she met and married her Alabama husband and after his retirement, they moved south. During her early married life, Joanna wanted an outlet from daily repetitions and she also needed a familiar balm to quiet the ache of homesickness. She turned to painting and began taking the first of many instructional classes.
Joanna uses watercolor to paint in layers. She finds this medium exciting because of its ease in flow and the watercolor allows her to create loose and floating motion with many different colors. Joanna paints wet on wet. She wets the paper with color, lets it dry, and then begins painting her layers. She utilizes the negative glazing technique (application and then removal of some of the glaze) to also build her painting. The dark colors Joanna paints last give her work more drama which allow her to play with light and dark.
Joanna’s art is also available at the Art Guild Gallery and Southern Hub, Selma.
