Pineneedle basket weaving is done by weaving together pine straw with raffia or thread using a large needle. Making hats takes about five days and weaving small baskets usually takes about three days for Mary. She got started because an old lady named Mrs. Mable Means taught her how to make baskets. After Mrs. Means passed away, Mary started making her own designs. She has also created items such as hats, placemats, picture frames, letter holders, doll beds, pendants, and different designs of baskets. Mary has been weaving baskets for twenty-four years. The most enjoyable aspect of this part of her life is teaching others how to weave baskets. She also enjoys attending arts and crafts shows and receiving rewards and plaques for basket weaving. Her work is also available at the Montgomery Art Gallery, Alabama Rural Heritage Foundation in Thomaston, Alabama, Black Roots Arts in Greene County, Alabama, and Red Rain Organic Store in Birmingham, Alabama.
