Sam Cheek grew up in the backwoods of Tennessee, a background that he feels greatly influences his artwork. From early childhood, he drew cartoons and painted, and furthered his education at Middle Tennessee State with a minor in art. After many years working overseas with environmental companies, Sam moved to Alabama where he eventually retired. His studio houses many of his creations and he hopes to expand by opening a gallery in Notasulga that will showcase not only his work, but also that of various artists around the country.
Sam’s son gave his father a box of small tools and balsa wood several years ago and told him to “make something”. What began as a humble hobby has grown into a steady business that provides Sam the opportunity to sell his unique birdhouses all over the world. Built to resemble old stores, buildings, homes, and churches, these award winning creations are original pieces of artwork that incorporate recycled materials with a vivid imagination and artistic flair.
