The topic of water resource management has never been more pressing in North Carolina. The current drought only underscores the complex, long-term problem of securing and maintaining sufficient water resources in North Carolina, one of the fastest growing states in the nation. This mini-conference, offered through the Local Elected Leaders Academy, will help prepare local elected leaders for the water challenges that lie ahead. Topics to be covered include an overview of water challenges locally, regionally, statewide, and for the southeast region of the US; how the legacy of elected officials will be tied to water resource decisions; competition versus cooperation in dealing with challenges and opportunities; and regional and state strategies for addressing current and future needs. Utilizing a mix of expert speakers, simulation technologies, and interactive discussions, this conference seeks to both educate participants and catalyze ideas and action around this important issue.
