This is the essential reference book for law enforcement officers, magistrates, prosecutors, public defenders, defense lawyers and judges. The book covers several hundred of the most commonly charged North Carolina criminal offenses. It sets out the elements of these offenses, discusses relevant case law, and provides other useful information on topics such as punishment, lesser included offenses, charging issues, multiple convictions, and related offenses. For each statutory crime, the statute is reproduced. The book also has chapters explaining criminal states of mind, bars and defenses, the different theories describing participants in crime, punishment under structured sentencing, and general crimes such as attempt and conspiracy. This edition replaces the fifth edition, published in 2001, and its 2006 cumulative supplement.
A 2008 supplement covers legislation enacted and case law decided from December 31, 2006 through December 31, 2008 is also available.
