INTRODUCTION
This article will explain how to back up your data in WinCruise.
SUMMARY
WinCruise makes it easy to automatically or manually back up data. Backing up data means that you save a copy of your database to removable media such as a Zip® disk or other addressable disk drive. You cannot backup to the A: drive or a backup tape using these methods. If something happens to the hard drive or server where you keep your data, you can restore your backed-up data. Information you entered since the last backup is not restored.
BACKING UP DATA
It is recommended that you:
-
Perform backups at the end of each business day
-
Backup to removable media
-
Use a separate disk for each day of the week
-
Store your backups in a fireproof container or in an off-site location
Configuring Backup Settings:
-
From the MENUBAR, choose FILE -> AGENCY SETTINGS.
-
Complete the BACKUP SETTINGS area of AGENCY SETTINGS EXPERT.
Backing up data:
-
From the START SCREEN (the white screen you see when you log in), choose FILE->BACKUP DATA.
-
WinCruise will ask, “Are you sure?” Click YES to continue or NO to terminate the operation.
-
WinCruise will display the BACKUP DATA dialog. Click START to back up or CANCEL to terminate the operation.
Field Description
Auto Backup Check this box if you want to use the automatic backup function. In order for the Auto Backup function to work you must leave the computer on, with WinCruise running, at the startup screen. If the computer is not on at the established time, a backup will be launched the next time WinCruise is run.
Every__Day(s) Enter the number of days between backups. Typically this is 1. You should backup data every day.
Rotate A rotation number is automatically added to the backup directory path name each time you perform a backup. Enter the last rotation number to use before cycling back to 1. For example, if you enter 7, the first seven backups will be numbered 1 through 7. The eighth backup will be numbered 1.
Next Rotation Displays the next rotation number. To _________ Enter the path to save the backup to. Use to browse your computer for the drive/directory you want the backup store in. WinCruise can perform a backup to any addressable disk drive. WinCruise can not access tape backup systems. Use the software included with your tape drive if this is the case.
Start Backup Time (Auto Backup only) Enter a time to perform the backup (hh:mm:ss am/pm). You must specify hours, minutes, and seconds.
Last Backup Displays when the last backup was performed.
Last Indexed Displays when indexes were last rebuilt.
Add Date Check this box to include the backup date in the backup folder name.
Auto Rebuild Indexes Recommended. Check this box if you want to rebuild indexes automatically when you perform a backup.
Note: Rebuilding indexes must be done from the server and with WinCruise running on no other computers.
Maintaining Lists
4. Data will be backed up to the directory you specified in BACKUP SETTINGS on the AGENCY SETTINGS EXPERT. A dialog will indicate the status of the backup in progress.
5. The BACKUP COMPLETE dialog will be displayed. Click OK.
6. Close WinCruise, remove the backup disc and store it someplace safe.
Insert the disc for the next backup cycle.
Restoring data:
Using Windows® Explorer, copy all the files in the backup directory to your Data directory (typically c:\wincruise\data). For details on copying files, see your Windows documentation or help.
