In the intro to Fantasy Factory, Volume 2, producer Steve Malis, coiffed in an enormous brown mullet and seated in such a way as to prominently exhibit his bulging basket, explains the history of gay porn studio Athletic Model Guild (AMG) and its founder, porn pioneer Bob Mizer.
In the 1950s, Mizer risked shame, ridicule and even jail for filming thousands of short, black-and-white "morality tales," vignettes featuring nearly-nude men frolicking, wrestling, fighting and otherwise being macho. This DVD is a collection of some of those shorts. Malis provides gleeful commentary throughout the hour-long retrospective, interjecting trivia along the way. My only disappointment was that he never whipped out his own monster meat! Can you say tease? Oh, well — maybe next time.
Bob Mizer mainly chose Tom of Finland-type models and situations for his films — the inevitable wrestlers, sailors, athletes, and tough guys we're all used to seeing roughing each other up in vintage, soft core porn/poser magazines. Since the films were made without sound, musical accompaniment has been dubbed in...
One particular standout segment reminds us just how long ago some of these were filmed — just a few years after World War II. It's a BDSM exercise called "The Nazi and the Paratrooper," in which a baby-faced Aryan man flogs a handsome, captive GI. The body contact between the two men in the piece is the most overtly sexual of any in the collection, and unless I'm wrong, a bit of tumescence is apparent if you look close.
Another standout is called "Angelic Frankenstein," which devolves into a silly fight scene like a few of the other films do. But contrived as it was, I would have given anything to have ripped off "Dr. Frankenstein's" little striped G-string and taken his mini-monster out for a walk in the fresh air. The boy was cute.
The most revealing, explicit, and thought-provoking footage on Fantasy Factory, Volume 2 can be found in two behind-the-scenes segments that are well hidden in the DVD extras. These candid clips give us a glimpse of Mizer's personality, his professional technique, and the personalities of the rough trade he photographed. In the first clip, Mizer simultaneously barks out stage directions and discusses the morality of male prostitution with Patrick Pyle, a "gay for pay" escort preparing for a photo shoot. Pyle masturbates over a "Hustler" magazine in order to achieve a proper erection, and while doing so, confesses that when he began working in the trade, he would become physically ill after having sex with other men. Not because there was cum in his mouth, mind you, but because he had moral objections to homosexuality. The conversation that follows between Mizer and Pyle is a voyeuristic plumb which sheds light on the man responsible for all these films and the gritty nature of his business. This piece and others like it could easily be the basis for a whole separate DVD collection, a more serious work, perhaps a documentary film.
Fantasy Factory, Volume 2 is a bit of history, with more socially-redeeming value than ninety-nine percent of the porn out there. Not only does it illustrate our collective gay experience, but it clearly goes to show the damaged, deviant, morally bankrupt, wildly permissive, sexually obsessive, shockingly perverse world we now live in by comparison... and just has to make you smile, doesn't it?
