Finally! A workshop for photographers and fine artists who have just come to digital printmaking, or who are on the cusp of converting their studio to digital. Designed by Jon Cone, this workshop will transform the newcomer into a confident scanner operator, digital shooter, imager and digital printmaker. It offers a simplistic approach to a thorough understanding of what is required and essential to make good inkjet prints.

(802) 439-5751 #101Digital Printmaking for Beginners and Novices $1,500 - 4 day course – Tuesday through Friday. Classes are 9a – 5p at Cone Editions Studio in East Topsham, VT – limited to a maximum of 8 and a minimum of 4. Workshop takes place 9am - 5pm each day at Cone Editions Press. Each attendee has their own computer workstation. The network for pinting includes many Piezography medium and large format printers with several PiezoTone and K7 ink choices. Additionally there are medium and large format EPSON printers installed with ConeColor inks. There are several scanners for attendee use, but most attendees prefer to contract the studio prior to their attendence to have Cone Editions scan their originals on the Hell 3400 drum scanner (at additional costs). There are many different papers to choose to print from Hahnemuhle, Bradford Papers, Legion Papers and others. The workshop starts with discussions and investigations into hardware and software, materials, longevity and archival properties, myths and realities. This is the time for each participant to also explain why they have come and what they need out of the workshop as it is tailored to fit each participant. In the classroom we will explore the human visual system and how it affects our ability to create and have a color-managed studio. Lighting and general studio conditions are demonstrated. Basic color management of monitors is explored demonstrating the easiest and best systems, avoiding the complex except for those who are willing to venture. Photoshop color management and color settings are explained so that the attendee can control how color is reproduced. Our goal here is to maintain color accuracy from the beginning to the end. We'll make this easy by explaining, demonstrating and then providing the attendee with settings which they can transpose to their own systems at home. Before we begin basic printer color management, we'll explore basic printer maintenance and operation. Then we'll show the easiest manner of acquiring professionally rendered ICC profiles to keep a studio simple and to avoid the expense of owning a personal profiling system. Scanning made simple, is the only way and truly its not that different from how we use our professional scanners. But it is essential to know how to scan not just for resolution and file size, but also gray balance and color accuracy. The main reason for acquiring color accurate scans is to minimize the time spent in Photoshop chasing color corrections. We'll also show you the basics of acquiring images with digital cameras to control color and print size.
After the user has learned to acquire digital camera images and scan negatives, transparencies and prints, it will be time to show how to take an image from start to finish through Photoshop to inkjet printer. Attendees will have ample lab time to explore and make their own prints, using the tools and techniques taught. We will show the simplest and most efficient ways to color correct and clean up scans. Beginners and novices will love our approach to manipulating images. Our techniques leave no "tell-tale" sign that the imager has been playing with their work. |
