[Byki 3] How do I type a letter with an accent / tonal mark?

One way to type these special characters is to use the BYKI Keymapper, a virtual keyboard that emulates a foreign language keyboard.

For some languages, certain punctuation marks may require the Shift key. Other characters including vowels may be available by holding down the Ctrl key and/or the Alt key, and this is important when you are using Arabic or Hebrew. Another way to get special characters and symbols (Watch the video!)
  1. In the appropriate BYKI game, type the base character for the character you want, such as the letter 'a' or capital letter 'S'.
  2. Press the up arrow key or the down arrow key on your keyboard. You will see an accent mark appear above the letter, such as 'á' (acute accent) or 'ß' (German lowercase sharps). (If you are typing in Russian, this will produce a stress mark!)
  3. If the accent mark or special character that appears is not the one you want, continue to press the up or down arrow key again, as many times as necessary for the character to appear.

NOTE: If an accent mark does not appear above the letter you type, this means that there is no accent mark associated with this letter. If you are learning Chinese, you will need to have the Transliterated Chinese keymapper selected to get the tonal marks (pinyin). Always make sure you have selected the appropriate BYKI Keymapper for the language you are learning.
