COLOR: Bamboo has a natural blonde hue, which is bamboo’s true color, along with its beautiful grain, growth patterns and joints.
HARDNESS: Janka hardness of 1253 for Horizontal and 1365 for vertical as compared to the hardness of 1290 for Red Oak.
GRAIN: Floorings.com offers a vertical-grained bamboo as well as a horizontal-grained bamboo. With vertical grain, the individual nodes are difficult to discern which results in a consistent color throughout the bamboo with even grain. With the horizontal-grain, each individual node is visible with about four node strands apparent per piece.
VARIATIONS WITHIN SPECIES AND GRADES: Low color variation in Vertical, Moderate color varitation in Horizontal.
SAWING/MACHINING: In comparison with Red Oak, Bamboo is about 25% harder, just as strong, and durable. It is also a very impact-resistant flooring. It expands and contracts 50% less than most other hardwoods. In places where there is high humidity or great temperature varitation season to season, bamboo can be used with great success.
SANDING: Sands well.
NAILING: Has a good holding ability.
FINISHING: No known problems.
