June 20, 2012 -- Our Man in D.C. Returns to San Francisco
Each year Peter Friedmann comes to address CBFANC and to bring us up to date on developments in our industry and in Washington DC. But he always wants to know what CBFANC members are most concerned about, and is asking us to provide him, in advance of his trip to San Francisco, whatever is on our minds, ranging from developments within CBP, to Congressional and Presidential politics. So, please look over Peter’s topics below, and send us any of your own that we’ll collate and forward to Peter for his consideration and incorporation into his remarks.
Amazing things can happen in this Election Year: How each member of the Bay Area International Trade community can benefit (or not)?
Trans Pacific trade is changing directions – how will it impact the Bay Area?
When will ACE be ready?
Will CBP really shut down ACS?
Will Option 4 be restored?
CBP’s View of The Role of the Broker – Trusted Partner?
Trans Pacific Partnership – is a new trade deal with Vietnam coming?
Transportation Infrastructure, how will it be paid for – increasing the gas tax?
The Elections –which states will decide who will be President?
Will the Panama Canal take business away from Oakland?
China trade – what does the future hold?
Why is the Keystone Pipeline a big deal?
Does Oakland have shipping capacity to handle the growing exports?
Will Ocean Freight Rate Indexes change the Carrier, Shipper and NVO relationship?
“It’s no surprise that Peter’s email address is “OurManInDC.” That handily sums up the role he plays on behalf of the brokers and forwarders, and other industry associations, individual companies, and local government agencies that depend on transportation and international trade”. [DC Velocity, Feb. 2011]
In addition to his work on behalf of the trade community, Peter sits on the finance committees of several Senators and Congress persons, and as Treasurer of several Political Action Committees, providing the closest possible view of the political process during this election year.
He serves as Counsel for the Pacific Coast Council of Customs Brokers and Freight Forwarders. Peter founded and is Executive Director of the Agriculture Transportation Coalition, the principle voice of agriculture exporters in U.S. transportation policy. He help found and continues as Counsel to CONECT, the Coalition of New England Companies for Trade, and his firm FBB Federal Relations represents U.S. port authorities, transit authorities, and a host of national and multinational corporations, all with a stake in infrastructure and international commerce.
As Counsel for the U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation, Peter was responsible for drafting the Ocean Shipping Act and has drafted numerous other transportation laws, including funding mechanisms by which ports and inland waterways are maintained -- the Harbor Maintenance Fee. Since leaving Capitol Hill, Peter has been a leading advocate for international trade interests before Congress and the agencies.
